Coupled modeling for LED optimization

The LED is the most important light source of our time. Starting as simple control lamps just a few years ago, modern smartphones, video walls or even headlights would not be possible without them. The maturity level of LEDs has reached a very high level.

The steps of improvement are getting smaller and come along with higher investment costs. In our fast and price driven markets more and more predictions for improvement need to be carried out by simulation. To achieve this LED models need to include all details from the bare chip performance to the complete package. Even physics beyond pure optics needs to be included. Finite efficiencies lead to heat generation, and light conversion is not a linear effect in all ways. To model the different physical effects very good commercial software is available.

Unfortunately non describing all effects at once. We developed a software coupling different programs to take all physical effects into account. Iteratively optical, thermal and electrical simulations are executed until full LED performance is calculated. With an agile project management and close reaction loops between software development and technical unit we realized a highly flexible program within a short time.

Roland Schulz holds a Diploma in Physics with a mayor in Optics and a PhD in electrical engineering with a mayor in laser technology from the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg.

In 2005 he joined OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. Since then he worked in different fields from laser development to customer support for general lighting.

Currently he is working in the technology department simulating laser and LED light sources.
