Highly automated driving: challenges on the road from highway chauffeur to urban pilot

Within the last months, self-driving cars were widely present in the media. Although autonomous cars are sometimes advertised to be ready for market introduction, a closer look reveals several open issues. The differentiation between automated and autonmous driving has a huge impact on the underlying vehicle system and software architecture. Even automated vehicles of today face several challenges for being market ready.

IAV is tackling some of these issues within the research project eJIT. Its goal and primary challenges are discussed in the presentation. They include technical issues as well as social questions. The presentation will round up, which kind of automation level can be achieved and what will be visible within the year 2017.
