The Automation of an entire Industrial 3D Printing Cell

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is becoming more important for industrial serial production. One year ago, Premium AEROTEC, a tier 1 supplier for the aerospace industry, Daimler, the car manufacturer, and EOS, the leading manufacturer of industrial 3D printers, started the NextGenAM project. The ultimate goal of the project is to utilize Additive Manufacturing in a fully automated serial production of aluminum parts for the automotive and aerospace industry. The production line consists of AM machinery combined with conventional systems for post-processing and devices for quality assurance. One of the main challenges is the orchestration and the seamless integration of those assets. A digital workflow needed to be developed to allow an efficient, transparent and fully automated production process. The first pilot plant has been installed at the technology center of Premium AEROTEC in Varel in the far north of Germany – a major milestone for the venture, a true factory of the future.

The presentation gives an overview of this lighthouse project and provides insights on the software solution which is used to turn this vision into reality.
